Summery of Being Bad Module

Age - 20

Sex - Male

What is your degree subject (both if joint) - Film Studies.

Does ‘Being Bad’ relate well to the other modules you are taking - The lesson on Bad Cinema, Smoking, Bad Comedians i guess help and relate to the other modules in some ways.

If so, how? And if not, why not? - Bad Cinema particularly is the best one out of the lot because of what was included in the lecture as to why the film we watched was bad.

Have you found ‘Being Bad’ too demanding, too easy, or at an appropriate level - Its been and appropriate level.

Do you think the list of topics covered on the module was appropriate? - Most of the list of topics covered was appropriate would have liked to have seen more of Bad Cinema films.

Are there any topics not included in the module that you would like to see included? - /

Do you think that the format for classes has worked well? - Yeah it worked well with the seminars and the debating between students and lecturers.

What did you think of the module team? - Very good and helpful

Do you think it would have been better to have had more:
Small group discussions?
Discussion and debate among the class as a whole?
Information and talk from lecturers? - A bit from all of these and possibly a different time slot for lectures.

The approach taken in the module is interdisciplinary (drawing on perspectives from English Literature, Film Studies, Creative Writing, Philosophy, Religious Studies, Media Studies and Politics): do you think this a useful way of approaching the topics covered in the module? - Yeah because Being Bad is involved in possibly all of these subjects.

Do you think that interdisciplinary modules are a good idea? - Yeah but possibly may help if there was separate classes for each subject as in film studies doing bad cinema for a module.

Do you think you have benefited from the interdisciplinary approach taken in the module? - I think that i have because i have learnt something and got an understanding from all of the lessons.

Would you like to see more modules that cover this kind of subject matter? - /

Are you planning to take the follow-up module PH2004 ‘It Shouldn't Be Allowed’ at level 2? - Yes its one of the modules i will most likely take next term.

Would you recommend ‘Being Bad’ to a friend? - Yeah

Do you think that the blogs (web logs) were a good idea? - Yeah its a better way of producing work and makes it more interesting compared to writing essays.

What did you think of the other assessments (e.g. would it be better to have one longer assessment rather than two shorter ones?)? - The other assessments are good because they basically get to the point of the question.

What have you learned from the module? - I have learnt that there in lots of media there is something bad and someone is being bad. I have learnt a lot more about cinema with how the distribution side works as in censorship.

What parts of the module have you found most useful and why? - Bad Cinema, Presentations in seminars.

What parts do you think were a waste of time and why? - Some lectures which do not completely relate to the subject I'm taking.

Are there any other comments you wish to make regarding ‘Being Bad’? - /

Being too Religious

Being religious does not mean being too religious. Being too religious is when you try to change someones religious views by force. Spouting bible verses hardle qualifies. Thats their perogative. You have a choice to listen. Too religious is when your religious views hurt someone else.

Doesn't Humphrey Bogart look cool with that cigarette? No wonder all the young men in the fifties wanted to smoke. It must av been great..nobody knew it was killing them, they were cheap, you could smoke where you liked...even in hospital..especially in the cinema..a golden age!

I think the watching banned films idea is good, specially for us film students. I think we could find at least one film that features one or more topics of the being bad lectures!

Being too Religious

Around the world many people follow religions and i guess its where you are from and what kind of situation you have been brought up in determines what religion you will or won't follow.
In my case i ain't religious but i have got a problem with anyone who is. I went to a church school but i didn't go to church. There are some people who can be a bit over the top with being religious like the men who go around Wolverhampton shouting out verses from the bible.

In film there is a difference in how religion is shown. From 1920 - 1970 there have been many epic bible stories like King of Kings (1961) which is about Jesus' life, The Ten Commandments (1956) which is about Moses and The Greatest Story Ever Told is a (1965) which again is about Jesus' life. All of these where very big budget films which follows the basic story. More recently The Passion of the Christ is a (2004) is a very graphic portrayal of the death and Resurrection of Jesus. This film was very detailed in the telling of the story but was very controversial. The Life of Brian (1979) by Monty Python is a film which has lots of content from the bible but is a comedy. This too was very controversial because of the content.

The film Matrix Reloaded (2003) was banned in Egypt no only because of the violence in it but also because of the religious content. When i watched this film i didn't even notice anything to do with religion so i guess this is taking religion a bit too far.

Bad Films

In general most films which are put to one side and are called 'BAD' films are mainly called this because of there content.

Films which are 'Bad' come under different typed of film genre's, from Horror to Gore-fest. Recent films like Hostle, Saw, House of a 1000 Corpses are films which have a high content of visceral violence.
This film poster for Hostel (2005) is shocking enough which the drill being put down someones throat
------->

This is done typically to shock the audience, to some people this can be too much and in some cases make people leave the cinema because it is too much. Back in the 70s when the Exorcist (1974) came out in the cinema's it was a film that shocked lots of people around the world because of what happened to girl.
Even a film like Monty Python's Life of Brian (1979) shock people because of the way it depicted the story of Jesus, the church didn't like it that they was joking about the bible.

Altogether films which are from these genre's are made so that they get across a message to people. Sometimes they are made in a way which will shock us into realising it, but in some cases films can go a bit too far and go beyond being a film and just being something distasteful.

Bad Comedian's

There ain't nothing really wrong with them its the comedians who ain't funny who the ones with a problem.
Though there are some comedians out ther who proberbly go a bit to far. Comedians like Richard Pryor, Bernard Manning and Roy Chubby Brown did and still do set there style of comedy to there specific audiences, who basically are fans. People who get offended by there jokes should really look into what kind of show they are going to see before hand.
Simply if you are offended then don't watch them!!!

and tbh Pryors is a Legend!!!

Heroes or Villains!!!

Throughout history there are many people who have become famous for 'Being Bad'. Names like Robin Hood, Al Capone, Jesse James, Bonnie & Clyde are famous now because of the story's which go with them some fact and some fiction.
http://britishhistory.suite101.com/article.cfm/outlaws

The story of Robin Hood is the one which have changed the most over the past 500-600 years. In recent years through Film and T.V. he is a Hero to many people. The film starring Errol Flynn The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) portrayed him as a swashbuckling hero who always defeats the bad guy. Same can almost be said for Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991) as he is shown again as the good guy defeating the bad guy.

Robin Hood was put towards a younger audience in the Disney animation Walt Disney's Robin Hood (1973). Basically Robin Hood's story and himself is far from what it originally was but i prefer to hear the modern day story of him which is depicted through film and T.V.
http://www.robinhood.org.uk/
The rest of the list are true people from American history who definitely are bad people, but are seen by some people as anti-heroes. Most recently Jessy James was played by Brad Pitt in the film The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007). This film is an adaption of the novel.
Overall through media these people have been glorified into people. At the same time they are shown as anti-heroes, but we shouldn't commit the crimes which they have done.

A shmoke und a pancake. You know, a flapjack und a shigarette? No? Shigar und a waffle? No? Pipe und a crepe? No? Bong und a blintz?

Smokin', I don't smoke but i know many people who do. It's not for me i think it smells like burn paper or something similar.

Though I do like smell of cigars.

I don't care to be honest if people choose to smoke as it is there choice but i would tell people i know who would consider to start smoking not to or that it could be very bad for them when they get older.

After seeing many classic films from the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s smoking back then was glamorised by Hollywood and was made out to be something that wasn't really that bad at all. More recently films which include someone smoking are films that are certified 12A + as i doubt you would see someone now smoking in a childrens films. Smoking in cinema was heavily used in film noir, gangster and thriller genre, shown in the pic with Humphey Bogart in the The Big Sleep (1946).

In the 1940s smoking was very common because of the war and people smoked because it calmed nerves, so i guess in a way that is one good point for smoking, but not a very good one.
http://www.tobaccofree.org/films.htm

On t.v. in programmes like Eastenders and Coronation Street smoking is has always been shown heavily. There arn't any advertisment of cigerettes any more as the government is trying to clean up britain. Its all change now though with smoking being banned in public places like restaurants, cafes, pubs and bars etc...

Gettin INKED!!!

There are many reasons of having tattoo's. Some people might want one because a friend has one, celebrity has one, or simlpy they just look pretty cool. I dont have one but id like one. To be honest if people have a problem with them they are just being a bit stupid because its a choice i guess to have one, so there aint wrong with having them. It cant be that bad because tattoo's can be traced back 1000s of years.

Kids?

I think that the film was very much like a documentary of real life and an insight into what some teenagers are thinkin. The way that scenes throughout the film show issues graphically shows that the film is shocking to watch. This is done maybe to shock us into understanding the consequences of actions.

Overall al lot of what happened in the film like taking drugs, all
night raves and getting drunk realistically happens around the world. The film does feel as though it has been made to purposely shock us into not doing these things and be aware of what dangers can happen if you are in someway connected to the problems portrayed in the film.
